README: Data and ciles for "Political Pressure on Central Banks" by Carola Binder
Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking
September 17, 2020

Most of the data for this paper was hand-collected by the author using a narrative approach, as described in the text of the paper.
The narrative data was merged with geographical data from CEPII, macroeconomic data from World Development Indicators (WDI), political characteristics data
from the Polity IV Project, data on central bank independence from Garriga (2016), Cukierman et al. (1992), and Arnone et al. (2007), and
data on central bank governor turnover from the KOF Swiss Economic Institute.

The data files provided in ASCII format:

CrossSection.csv: Cross section-level data. Unit of analysis is the central bank.
NarrativeUncollapsed.csv: Report-level data hand collected from Business Monitor International and Economist Intelligence Unit
PanelQuarterly.csv: Panel data. Unit of analysis is the central bank-quarter.
PanelYearly.csv: Panel data. Unit of analysis is the central bank-year.
Timeseries.csv: Time series data. Unit of analysis is the quarter.

For replication, make sure that the data files and do files are saved in the same folder.
Begin by running the file PrepareData.do. This will import the ASCII data files, save them as Stata .dta files,
and generate the appropriate time series or panel variables. The data files that will be generated are:

CrossSection.dta
NarrativeUncollapsed.dta
PanelQuarterly.dta
PanelYearly.dta
Timeseries.dta

Next, run the file TablesAndFigures.do. This file calls the .dta files listed above to produce all of the tables and figures in the paper.
See comments in the file indicating the code corresponding to each table and figure.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are exported as .png files. The information in the tables appears in the Stata window.
